When Jacob Riis’ How the Other Half Lived was published, it was a shock to those who read it and spurred social reform in New York City. However, since this book was also a study in photojournalism and we did not have access to the photos for this class, you need to understand Riis’ background before you can interpret some his writing. Even though Riis himself was an immigrant from Denmark, he came from a middle-class background; he was not one of the starving poor. His father was a schoolmaster but Riis decided to become a skilled worker (carpenter) instead of following a life in academia. ... ”
Riis’ description of the situations seem to suggest that the people he is writing about know no better and do not care to know any better.
