Dallas Fort Worth International Airport Terminal D Marketing Project

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

     Dallas Fort Worth International Airport would like to bring American Airlines onboard to be a member of the team that truly will make DFW, “The World Connected.” The increasing number of international and domestic travelers is increasing at an astounding rate and figures from around the country are already surpassing pre-9/11 travel statistics. The DFW Airport Board of Directors believes that the direct participation of American Airlines will not only benefit the airport system, but will also benefit the airline greatly. ... The DFW Airport assists airlines in recouping costs associated with providing terminals through the usage of a Passenger Facility Charge (PFC). We propose that in order for American Airlines to bring in more passengers through the DFW Airport they will need to take part in being the anchor airline at the new Terminal D, part of the airports Capital Development Project (CDP).
     This new facility would eliminate many of the current problems encountered when traveling at DFW airport as well as address other issues of great importance to both the airlines and passengers.      Not only would the bond help pay for the construction of the terminal, it will also pay for the new Automated People Mover (APM) as well as additional taxiways and a new runway. These services, all part of the Capital Development Project, will aid American Airlines in offering superior service to its customers. This is extremely important for American Airlines as we enter the 21st century and as American continues to maintain Dallas Fort Worth International Airport as its primary hub for domestic and international flights in the United States.

INTRODUCTION

The DFW International Airport, encompassing some 29. ... In 2002, DFW Airport handled over 4.4 million international travelers and nearly 53 million domestic travelers, making it the third busiest airport in the World. DFW Airport is conveniently situated between Dallas and Fort Worth and has grown greatly from its humble beginnings in 1974 with just 18,000 passengers per day. The expansion capabilities of the DFW Airport are tremendous. Currently the airport utilizes four main terminals, A, B, C, and E, and has adequate space for Terminals D and F as well as adequate space for additional runways, taxiways, and support systems that keep the airport functioning efficiently. Over thirty (30) major airlines operate from the DFW airport and The Board of Directors is seeking to increase that number as well as the number of passengers that pass through these gates.
     
     Currently Terminals A, B, C, and E share in international and domestic arrivals/departures; however, Terminal D will be able to accommodate all international travelers and some domestic travelers. The new terminal will be able to handle three times the current number of international travelers and can offer them more options for concessions, parking, and even terminal transfers than any of the previous terminals at the DFW Airport.
     The state of the art Automated People Mover (APM) system is the fastest of its kind in the World and save the DFW Airport system several million dollars per year, and those savings are of course passed on to airlines that fly into the airport. The current APM system was installed as a joint venture of American Airlines and DFW Airport in the 1970s and was advanced at the time of its construction. However, this system has placed a financial burden on the DFW Airport and is in desperate need of replacement. Not only has the current Automated People Mover been a complaint among travelers to the airport, but so has the inefficient parking solutions that are available. ... This is extremely frustrating to passengers and has the potential for passengers to not want to use DFW Airport. The new parking facility, budgeted in the Capital Development Project will allow new parking spaces to be created alongside the terminal. ...
     If American Airlines does not participate in the opportunity to run a highly efficient, passenger pleasing terminal, revenue will be lost and travelers will utilize the flights of competitors, which is something that AMR can not afford during these turbulent times. ...

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

The Situation
     In 2000, a noticeable expansion in international travel from North America took place, and the increase marked a year with over 366 million inbound and outbound trips. ...
