One Victim or Two? “No right is more basic than the right to live” (Tribe 3). Over the years, that right has become meaningless for unborn people. The courts of the United States through the case Roe versus Wade have made it a right to kill a fetus, rather than a right for the fetus to live. “Some critics say that the problem is the Supreme Court’s godlessness or its blindness to the killing of unborn children; others blame the court’s frustration of the democratic process. Still others accuse the court and politicians of insensitivity to women’s needs and concerns” (Judges 6). The decision of this court case not only is not sensible, it also has had pitiful consequences on society. Since Roe versus Wade, in 1973, arguments have been running strong about this abortion. It has divided America. People that are pro-life continue to protest the legalization, while people that are pro-choice still fight back. One of the main questions of the debate is, is the fetus a person? Most pro-choice say life begins at birth, as opposed to pro-life who claim life begins at conception. The definition of life is the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being fro ma dead body (Citation). Right from conception, one can see that the fetus is growing. A human being grows gradually throughout one’s life, starting from conception. This means the fetus is not dead, and should be able to live a life on earth. Each moment of life is a gift of God. Psalm 39:4 states “Lord, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.” This shows that life is short no matter how long we live; therefore, it is important that each human being get a chance to experience life on earth, rather than begin denied the opportunity in the fetus. Another pro-choice argument is that women should have the privacy to do what they feel is best for them in the situation. After all it is her body; no one else’s. Even in civilized societies neither women nor men have complete control of their own bodies. For example, things such as mutilation of one’s one body, use of drugs, prostitution, or suicide are in fact illegal (Nathanson 191). So when the supporters of pro-choice claim that a woman should have the choice of doing what she pleases to the body, they are wrong.
