Fahrenheit 451, by science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, takes place in a totalitarian society of the future. Books have been outlawed by the government, and likewise the people have been deceived to believe that books were authored to be burned. The characters in Bradbury’s novel posses unique traits that are critical to convey conflict and plot. Ray Bradbury utilizes characterization to contrast between characters and represent the many facets of this totalitarian society. The book revolves around the protagonist, Guy Montague, a fireman who makes his living by burning books and the houses the books are secretly kept. As the novel progresses, Montag realizes his life is unrewarding. Through a brief friendship with another character, Montag realizes he is not in love with his and has come to dislike the society in which he lives.
