In very simple terms it is a study relating to the laws of physics when they are applied to human movement. To fully understand biomechanics one must become familiar with a set vocabulary, particularly that associated with the dynamics aspect of physics. However, physics is a precise science and biomechanics is not. The study of physics is one relating to rigid levers, and to finite particles, whereas the levers of the body are never fully rigid and there is no finite point of the body in movement, unless we refer to the centre of gravity of the body. For example, we can state that the speed of a ball leaving a tennis racket head is 80mph, or 40 mph per second, a statement reflecting the general movement of the ball through the air in a set direction. However, we know that the surface of the ball might be moving faster and even moving in a slightly different direction, as would be the case with topspin serve, for example.
