Marijuana is currently an illegal drug in Canada. ... With all this information NDP leader Jack Layton still encourages the legalization of marijuana.
As far back as 1998 an article published in the Ottawa Citizen was suggesting the laws on marijuana possession be relaxed. They were suggesting that possession of marijuana warrants fines, not jail time. The existing criminal penalties against marijuana have done little to enhance public health and safety according to Canadian Center on Substance abuse. The use of a civil violations instead of a criminal violations would ease the burden on the justice system and eliminate criminal records for marijuana possession, easing the burden of gaining employment and cross border activity.
