Adeimantus immediately ask how the guardians can possibly be happy with the situation Socrates describes. They will watch as the populace gains wealth and luxury, while they exist to labor in protection of that wealth but cannot share in it. Surely, this is against the spirit of this ideal City, if one class is so unhappy. Socrates responds that, firstly, the guardians won't be unhappy, as their education will improve their understanding of things. Secondly, this arrangement is in fact exactly in keeping with the spirit of the city, because it guarantees the whole city's greatest common happiness, which is the goal in the first place, not the guarantee of excessive happiness on some part.
