I am going to be referring to two short stories, which are “Little Red Riding Hood” which is a traditional fairy story of how a young girl goes to visit her grandma, and some strange things happen to her along the way. The other short story is a modern version of “The Werewolf” written by Angela Carter. It is a similar idea to “ Little Red Riding Hood” but has been changed. In “ Little Red Riding Hood” there are six characters in the short story. There is her Mummy, Daddy, Grandma, Little Red Riding Hood herself, the Wolf and the Woodcutter. ... ” We can presume from this that little red riding hood plays a comforting role. ... The main reason of his appearance in the story is to be the hero who saves the grandma and Little Red Riding Hood. ... ” The wolf maybe implies as being a sexual predator in the story towards little red riding hood. When the woodcutter cuts off the “wolf’s head” it is a phallic symbol of chopping of the wolf’s penis so he can’t get to Little Red Riding Hood anymore. Little red riding hood is the main character in the story. ... The red could be associated with love or evil. Little Red Riding Hood is gullible as she follows “the route” that the wolf indicated. Also she is not daft as she can tell the difference between her grandma and the wolf. In “The Werewolf” there are three characters, which are the mother, the grandmother and the girl. ... Neither is she made to appear as a stereotypical female unlike the female characters in “Little Red Riding Hood” who are. ... There is also evidence that she is strong “But the child was strong, and armed with her father’s hunting knife;” “The Werewolf” has a similar idea to Little Red Riding Hood but there are many things that show a difference.
