I Sophocles

I, Sophocles, was born on 496 B. ... I was the son of Sophillus, a wealthy armor-maker so therefore received the best traditional aristocratic education. I studied all of the arts. By the age of sixteen, I was already known for my beauty and grace. I was chosen to lead a choir of boys at a celebration of the victory of Salamis. Twelve years later when I was only twenty-eight and my studies were complete, I was ready to compete in the City Dionysia. ...
In my first competition, I took first prize defeating Aeschylus. I won about twenty times and won many second place finishes.
As my life went on, I served as an ordained priest in the service of two local heroes, Alcon and Asclepius, the god of medicine.
