“Ball no less than book is my constant companion.” (Carter 23) This quotation said by Sidonnius Apollinaris, who lived in the Middle Ages, allows us to see that sports played a role in people’s lives. Although there are a few scattered references to sports in the works of literature, these references are usually negative and are unlike the descriptions of sports that one can find in the ancient Greek Olympics. This lack of attention to this topic is due to reasons such as diffuse evidence, diverse societies, and complex source material. Sports in the Middle Ages have always been overlooked by the Olympics and the Colosseum. With a lack of television, movies, transportation, or any other kind of technology-based entertainment, sports were an important way to pass time as well as to keep in shape. Also, most sports of the time period were used as training for battle, as war and fighting were very common at the times. In general, medieval sports were practiced primarily by men. Seeing right through the Olympics and the Colosseum, many questions will be answered about sports in the Middle Ages. What role did sports play in this period?
