Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter shows the early alternative to strict Puritanism in a very good light. By having two of his main characters, Dimmesdale and especially Hester, follow this alternative and be oppressed by the strict Puritan majority the reader immediately sympathizes with Hester and Dimmesdale as well as their practice of Puritanism. ... Even when Minister Wilson says that if she gives up the father’s identity, then perhaps someday soon she could take off the scarlet letter on her breast she offers up this response “Never…It is too deeply branded. ... The gentle side of Puritanism is also represented in Hester and her feelings about helping the poorest of her society. ...
The other main character in The Scarlet Letter who follows the more moderate form of Puritanism is Reverend Dimmesdale.
