When Isaac grew old, he married a woman by the name of Rebekah, who also had a son. His name was Jacob-(whose name was later changed by God to Israel) Abraham Sarah Isaac------ Rebekah Jacob Descendants of Jacob were called the Israelites Israel: “One who has contended with divine and human beings” Patriarchs and Matriarchs § The origins of Judaism were thought to be from Abraham, who everyone considers as the “father of biblical faith”… However, there are also the patriarchs and matriarchs of Judaism too. He demonstrated this by giving Jacob a colorful coat. His brothers got jealous and decided to sell him as a slave in Egypt in 1700 B.C.E. However, much to their astonishment, he gained great authority in Egypt and forgave his brothers for their wrongdoings and invited his family to join him in Egypt.
