Do Muslim Women want to be freed?
A lot of Muslim women are grouped into cultural stereotypes, whether it is by the clothes they wear, the way they are “obedient” to their husbands, or by their religious beliefs. ... Lila Abu-Lughod, a professor at Columbia University has argued that they really don’t want to be “saved”, and I totally agree with her.
I was a little disturbed when I had listened in on Professor Abu-Lughods’ lecture and learned that Muslim women were being called “women of cover” by President George Bush and that white men were saving brown women from brown men. ... These women do not feel like they have to dress the way they do, they do it because their husband should be the only one looking at their body in a sexual way, and it gives them a feeling of respect and modesty.
