2001: A Space Odyssey was a movie that took place in three different periods of time. Knowing that, a theme for this movie would be “Evolution”. This is expressed in the beginning of the movie when the apes, early humans, were fighting over a water hole to survive. They didn’t know how to fight so all they could do is scare the other ape “clan” and hope they ran off. They could never fight each other, they didn’t know how. But soon after the first appearance of the “Monolith” an ape begins to notice that a bone can be used to harm another creature. So when these apes meet the other ape “clan” at the waterhole again, one side of the apes has weapons of bone and uses it to kill off an enemy ape. The others are scared and run off. This was the first step in evolution for the human race. They now could hunt, and defend each other. I still can not decide if the monolith had anything to do with the sudden use of weapons. It just appeared out of nowhere, and then I think that it gave them knowledge of what to do with the bones or something of the sort. Another theme could be considered “Survival” in the third part of the movie. HAL glitches up then Dave and Frank decide to do something about it. But HAL knows their plans and decides to defend himself. HAL wants to survive, but so dose Dave when Frank dies. Survival was very important for the third part of the movie. And in the end Dave had won against HAL. I noticed some techniques such as the camera focusing on HAL’s “eye”. It was most likely done to show that HAL is watching, and listening to everything. You really got to see it when Dave and Frank were deciding what they should do to HAL in the pod. The screen would be dark on all four sides of the screen , except for a circle in the center.
