In 4th century Egypt there lived a man named St. Anthony. St. Anthony was
well-known as “The Father of the Monks” and started monasticism as we know it
today. ... Another is The Life of Anthony,
written by a bishop who lived in 4th century Egypt named Athanasius. The two
works, about the same man, show drastically different images of him. Athanasius
stresses the extraordinary feats of St. Anthony to further himself in his career with
the church.
The Sayings of the Desert Fathers portrays St. Anthony as a common man
who has wise advice for his fellow monks about how to live a life which pleases
God.
“Someone asked Abba Anthony, ‘What must one do in order to please
God? ... ”1
In contrast, The Life of Anthony shows St. Anthony as a common man who
overcomes many amazing tasks placed before him by evil itself and becomes an
unbelievable storybook type character.
