Santiago, the protagonist of The Old Man and the Sea, provides a great example of a common man who defines himself with an incredible achievement. Throughout the story Santiago wrestles to bring in a monstrous fish that he hooked by himself on his tiny skiff in the middle of the ocean. Santiago struggles for days with the fish, pushing himself to the brink of exhaustion.
