What is the the difference between skills & competencies ? The difference between skills & inventory is that for ex: skill could be proficiency in power point while a competency would be like creative thinking ,effective negotiation etc. What is competency mapping? Competency mapping demonstrates what type of knowledge and skills are required and/or found within the human capital of the organization. Competency maps help to build a directory, match people to jobs or positions or determine what training programs are needed to fill skill gaps and in evaluating the performance across the organization of individuals. Why is competency mapping gaining importance ? Competency mapping is based on the view that exemplary performers who exist in each job category can be as much as 20 times more productive than the average performer in the same category. If it were possible to get all the employees up to the level of the exemplars, then an organization might be able to get the same work out with a factor of 20 fewer people. Or it might be able to realize an increase in productivity of perhaps as much as 20 times what the organization is currently realizing.
