Three Sisters How would you perform the role of Natasha in Acts 1 and 2to convey
When Natasha Enters in Act One she is wearing a Pink dress and a Green belt and appears flustered as she talks to herself about how she is late and reassures herself about her hair. ... As soon as Natasha enters her insecurity and fear is realised with Olga saying how her green belt is ‘wrong’ and doesn’t go with the rest of her outfit. ... Although Natasha somewhat nonchalantly proclaims ‘It’s not really Green, though, you see, its more sort of neutral’, This type of nonchalant speech is passively asserting power and control and is a trait which has to be held in importance when performing the role of Natasha successfully. In the next exchange Natasha says ‘they are very informal here’ I think she is speaking more to herself than anyone else which she also does earlier when she first enters. ... When playing Natasha in Act one it is a key element to use her body language to give off more of a shy sense –especially has she has a limited speaking role while at the table- she needs to be sitting politly but also in a way that shows she is shy and not showing the people at the table her whole self, as can be said for the whole Act. ... Her idiosyncrasies in this act are not as prominent in this act as other acts, again because she is holding off and not showing her whole self to the audience or other characters. When speaking in the role her voice needs to be firm and clear at all times but perhaps a little quiet and soft to emphasise that she is a nervous guest of the house but at the same time wants to assert some power and control. Her tone especially in the first vocal exchange should be full of worry and nerves, after all one of the sisters has just criticised her choice of belt. ... The way she appears awkward must all be performed in body language and very naturalistically because it would be easy to perform this awkwardness and shy exterior with a bit of melodrama but it is essential everything is played subtly.
