A brief analysis of the chimney sweeper

William Blake begins his poem by relating a small child’s tragedy. This young boy was sold by his father to be a chimney sweeper after his mother's death. We realize that he’s unable to pronounce the letter “s” due to his small age. There is dramatic irony when he says sweep without pronouncing the letter “s’’, because he really refers not to the word sweep which means cleaning the chimneys but to the word weep which means to cry with all your heart. The second stanza talks about one of his fellows, whose name is Tom Dacre. He was crying because he had to shave his curly hair which look like a lamb’s back, so that the chimney’s dirt wouldn’t stick on it. He then calmed down after being told not to worry because it will grow back again. Through out his friend’s story he tries to describe their miserable childhood. On the third stanza, the young child “Tom” after calming down went to sleep and had a dream.
