Igor Stravinsky changed the way we listened to classical music. Born in st. Petersburg Russia. His father worked for the Russian opera company as a singer. Young Stravinsky’s interests lean toward the legal profession but some of his musical sketches were seen by the great composer Rimsky Korsakov the most famous composer in Russia at the time. Igor studied as a student of Rimsky Korsakov and for a short while under the master himself before his death learning sound technical abilities and arraignments for the orchestra as well as to use the countries folklore and stories as themes. After Rimsky’s death in 1908 a young Stravinsky began to work with a ballet composer in Paris named Diaghilev. “The first was the fire bird based on an old Russian legend. The whole piece was pretty boring (as Stravinsky admitted himself) but the various excerpts from it on the firebird suite show that Stravinsky had it on something real. Rhythm orchestral, color ,melody are all there in a folktale, in this case about a carnival puppet who comes to life and falls in love with another puppet petrushka is like a good movie in that once it gets going it doesent stop.
