Holden has not yet entered the world of manhood. In the book The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, a young boy named Holden is struggling to cross over to manhood. He goes through many experiences in his life but has not won the battle of becoming a man like ordering a hooker, smoking and drinking, and living on his own. Holden tries many things to become a man. For instance, he orders a hooker so he can loose his virginity. “Okay. I’ll send a girl up in about fifteen minutes.” (119) One would think that when you have sex, it is a way of becoming a man. Holden meets Maurice on an elevator.
