The “Zulu Kings” is a book that tries to portray the dealings of the first European traders that settle at port Natal in South Africa with first the great Zulu king Shaka, and then his successor Dingane as objectively as possible. ...
While Roberts makes it clear in this first part of the book that Shaka is by no means a peace-loving man or a supporter of peoples’ freedom, it is explained that the Zulu way of life requires Shaka to be a ruthless dictator in order to have any hopes of staying as a Zulu king. In this respect, the “Zulu Kings” tells a very similar story to Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart”. In this Roberts explains in detail the Zulu way of life and how Shaka managed to build a strong and stable empire using this way of life. ... On the other hand, quite ironically, it is the boers that simply want an existence independent of the British government rule that move in drowes to Natal and end up wiping out entire Zulu army as a consequence.
