It was the time of counterculture and rebellion; the new generations of people were beginning to 3. What immediate causes led to the event? On Friday May 1, 1970 a protest against the invasion of Cambodia took place on the Kent State campus, and another was planned for the following Monday, May 4. Later that evening a crowd of people moved towards the middle of town, many under the influence of alcohol and filled with indignation over the invasion of Cambodia, they damaged some windows in the city. The mayor surveyed the scene and after hearing rumors of radical plots declared a state of emergency and asked for the National Guard to be called into the city.
