A Better Way
Love; the special relationship we spend most of our lives either dreaming about, or searching for. ... In the end we wish for true love, and happiness, but most of the time we get a contrary array of outcomes. ... Two such various perspectives are those shared between Sammy, from John Updike’s “A&P”, and Prufrock, from T.S Elliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.”
Although both Sammy and Prufrock seemed to share a common desire, they had two completely different dispositions towards it. Where as Sammy seems to harbor optimism and hope, Prufrock seems to be engulfed by fear. And from comparing both characters, we are better able to see the various human ideologies that stem from the search of the most common of human desires, love and happiness. ... Who they are is quit simple; Sammy is a nineteen years old cashier, and Prufrock is an older gentleman. ... While Sammy describes the psychical surroundings of his monotonous workplace, Prufrock seems to be in a dismal mental setting.
In Elliot’s poem, Prufrock is meandering around the foggy streets and alleys of his mind. ... 764) This tedious argument seems to be Prufrock’s constant battle with his own feelings.
