The character of Iago in Shakespeare’s play Othello is not only and interesting and complex character, but he also contributes to the play’s theme significantly. Not only does Iago turn the play into the tragedy that it turned out to be, but his character has been one of the most discussed and analyzed characters in all of Shakespeare’s plays. The reasoning behind Iago’s vengeance against Othello may be justified to some point, but why he chooses to target Othello, instead of Cassio is a very fascinating topic, and show’s just how complex and interesting a character Iago is, but this hatred Iago has developed for Othello turns out to be not only his downfall, but brings about the downfall of Othello, Desdemona, Emilia, and Roderigo. The quote above reinstates Iago’s hatred for Othello, though why he is more angry at Othello than at Cassio, for whom he should have more malice toward, is one of Iago’s rational that makes his character that much more interesting.
