Tecumseh

Tecumseh was born in 1768, and was the fifth born into his family. At a very early age, Chiksika taught Tecumseh the ways of a Shawnee warrior. It was apparent that Chiksika loved his brother very much, and this feeling was mutual with Tecumseh. After a hunting expedition, where a horse threw Tecumseh off and broke his leg, Chiksika took delicate care of his brother until the bone healed properly. Since Chiksika was 10 years older than Tecumseh, it was only natural that they remained close until Chiksika’s death in 1788.
Growing up amidst war, the young Tecumseh was profoundly influenced by his experiences. ... For a young man so committed to the warrior’s path, Tecumseh’s first military encounter was a shameful one. ... After his brother’s death, Tecumseh was forced to stand on his own. Chiksika played the role of brother and father, and with him gone, Tecumseh would take on the role of a war chief. ... He never developed the skills of a warrior that Tecumseh possessed, and was a poor provider for his family. ... The religion spread quickly and soon had many followers, but by 1809, following the Treaty of Fort Wayne, Tecumseh stepped from the shadow of the Prophet and became the main leader of the Indian movement. Being a war chief however, Tecumseh believed that "only assertive political and military leadership could protect the Indian land base.
