Iago’s Reckless Desire for Destruction
Iago is a strange character in Othello. ... Iago’s predetermined hate for Othello, his being paid to plot Othello’s downfall and his recklessly sadistic character, altogether create and become why Iago acts the way he does.
Iago simply hates Othello to begin with. There is a deeply rooted hatred buried in Iago that makes it so easy for him to plot Othello’s destruction. “Though I do hate him as I do hell pains” (971) Early in the play it is revealed that Othello did not choose Iago to be his Lieutenant, but chose Casio, who is an inexperienced solider with more knowledge in a textbook then knowledge from experience. ... This simply angers Iago. ... Iago’s last act against Othello is at the very end of the play when Othello ask Iago why he did it. Iago refuses to tell and Othello dies not ever knowing. Iago hated Othello and would not even grant him his death wish.
