I will be exploring the ethical issue of pornography by comparing and contrasting a Jewish response and the Catholic Bishops’ response from "Renewing the Mind of the Media: a Statement on Overcoming the Exploitation of Sex and Violence in Communications”.
In 1998, The Catholic Bishops of the United States released a statement concerning sex and violence in the media. ... The Bishops also stated that those in the pornography industry are harming their relationships with their community and family. ...
In their solution, the Bishops address the government, the pornography industry, parents, and consumers. ...
I think that the Catholic Bishops’ response is a very realistic one. ... The Jewish response has many of the same ideas and values as those represented in the Bishops’ statement; however, since I am not a Jew, I can only speculate on a response in light of Judaism. I would like to believe that they would utilize much of the same strategies as the Catholic Bishops’, but would focus on the communal and individual level more. ... Since pornography attacks the core of that basic religious belief of both religious faiths, I think the Jewish and Catholic religions are more aligned in their efforts to take a stand against the pornography business, even though the Jewish religious community has not adopted a coordinated, definitive document as the one adopted by the Catholic Bishops.
