Legacy of the Mycenean Civilization

... The first were the Minoans; a small but thriving, culturally rich and powerful civilization that was born from the tiny island of Crete. Although this powerful bronze aged civilization was at the peak of its power, it disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared. A hundred miles from the island of Crete and its grand city of Knossos was another little known island called Thera; little did anyone know that its volcano and the eruption that would follow would eventually create thousands of dead, a natural disaster beyond anyone’s imagination and the end of the Minoan civilization. But life did go on and out of the ashes of this dead civilization rose a Greek-speaking civilization north of Crete, which is to be named after the fortress-city of Mycenae. This new civilization reached its peak at the late Bronze Age and left a legacy, a heritage that the people of ancient Greece would inherit. All over the world, people would remember them for their greatest achievements and works, testaments to an ancient civilization that dominated the Aegean Sea and the Ionian coast for four centuries. ... How, after so long a time, can men still remember the name of a civilization long dead and gone? ... The Dorian people had no love for the Myceneans, and after their invasions had taken place, the economic collapse that followed led the Mycenean people from their grand cities and into the countryside. Indeed, the great Mycenean cities were abandoned to their fates and eventually the same had happened to the once grand Mycenaean civilization. ... The legacy that was left behind by the Mycenean people and their civilization, before they were destroyed and forgotten by another people almost completely ignorant of writing and culture.
But what is a legacy? Or more importantly, what is the legacy of a civilization? Legacy is simply the word used to mean something that is handed down from an ancestor or predecessor, for example; wealth or power. If I was to own a factory, make it rich and prosperous and later on pass it to my children, then I can say that is my legacy. In other words, legacy is the reason why people still remember the grand civilizations built by the Romans and the Babylonians. ... Behold, the legacy of the Roman Empire. As I said, this is what this paper is all about; the legacy of the Mycenaean civilization.
Monuments
The fall of the once mighty Minoan civilization led to the most flourishing period of the Myceneans. ... The Mycenaeans couldn’t have simply constructed such large structures and cities and possess a large amount of wealth at the same time by being pitiful; these showed that there was a time in history that the Mycenaeans were a powerful and rich civilization which stood uncontested for quite some time. ...
Culturally, the Mycenaean civilization is rich and wealthy. ... Their culture became an important aspect in their legacy since the Greeks used the Mycenaean culture as an example to apply it for themselves. ... All in all, the culture of the Mycenaean civilization was evidence enough that the Mycenaeans were a great and grand power at the time and that their culture was an important factor for the following Hellenistic and Macedonian Greek civilizations.
