A Picture in Time The event took place back in 1988 while I was a senior in high school. The setting was in Hartford, WI at the Little Ten Conference Track Meet. The mood was set by 4 years of being on the Varsity team leading up to that point. Many races, many wins, many school and conference records set, all were important, but could not compare to the experience of that day. I will attempt to show that a single event can create an aesthetic experience by a performer and the audience. The meet began as many before with a strong showing by our team, with the addition of trying to obtain a conference championship for our school. We were all competing at our highest levels due to this being our last meet together and last effort to achieve a 4-year goal. As I was competing and taking in the day, trying to absorb the moments, I observed a coach video taping the events. Thinking to myself that this day would be captured for future reminiscing. The progression of the meet was very important to the setting for the aesthetic experience for both myself (performer) and the audience. Throughout the meet another team and ourselves were battling for the title, point for point. The tallying of the points prior to the last event culminated in a tie for the championship. Known by the performers and the audience what needed to be accomplished to achieve our goal prior to the race was also helpful in setting up the aesthetic experience. The last event was the 4x400 relay. Three other teammates and myself running 1 lap each and I was the final runner. As we prepared and warmed up for the event we noticed our opponents. We had been competing against them for 4-years and knew they were their best to offer. As we approached the starting line the crowd began to swell. The air grew heavy for the performers and the audience to further the emotional setting for the experience. Although, still not knowing the outcome and realizing the experience was evident. The first runners took the blocks and the gun fired to start the race.
