The film The Salton Sea is compelled by the lead characters’ slow revelation and transition from a husband and phenomenal trumpet player, to a crystal methamphetamine “tweeker” driven by revenge. Through out the film the main character is on a journey of self-discovery. ... The setting switches between two very different locations just as the character switches between two very different lives. ... The other is the remote; desolate Imperial Valley, specifically the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is 226 feet below sea level and has no ocean outlet resulting in extremely high salinity levels and has an unusual motionlessness and dense quality about it. ... The character struggle is conveyed though out the telling of his story, the film continually flashes back to his past that haunts him and is his driving force for revenge. The character blames himself for the murder of his wife, because he got lost and this put his wife in the wrong place at the wrong time. ... ”
The lead character in this film is alive but lifeless; he is one man with two identities. ... The Character had always identified himself with the persona of Tom Van Allen but by immersing himself in an underworld of crystal methamphetamine he created the identity of Danny Parker. ... When the costume was on it was obvious that the character had to continually remind him self of who he was pretending to be, by repeating, “I’m Tom Van Allen, I’m a trumpet player”.
