W.E.B. Du Bois was perhaps the greatest black
intellectual of his time. The Souls Of Black Folk,
published during the dawning of the twentieth century,
1903, is an influential and historical collection of
fourteen essays written by DuBois. This book can be
classified as autobiographical literature, because each
essay is indicative of the author’s personal perspectives
on the history of black oppression. Although much of this
book focuses on opinion, most of the author’s opinion is
supported by fact, and the fact remains, that black
oppression did exist and has served as the foundation of
America. ... ” (DuBois)
If an argument were to be interpreted from this book, it
would be that African Americans lived under a system based
on subjugation and racial division, and many gathered to
rise above the oppression during the late eighteenth and
early twentieth centuries. DuBois pointed out that the
problem of the color line remained after the emancipation
proclamation. ... Few will doubt that
DuBois’ words have changed the way in which we view
ourselves and our country. ... DuBois was a
brilliant strategist, and in publishing this book he called
on Americans to challenge their own beliefs, whites about
their black neighbors and blacks about themselves. ... The great benefit is that DuBois presents
history on a personal level, however it is important to
keep in mind that DuBois’ ideologies are not representative
of all black individuals during his time.
