The progression of leadership begins when faith is established in one’s own capability and heightens through one’s capability of having faith in others. Moses begins as a man with tremendous potential and little ambition. He is seemingly satisfied as a shepherd and is afflicted with a speech impediment that offers little help to improve his esteem. Moses has little faith in his capabilities until “the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush,” and commanded him to seek the Pharaoh and “ bring [His] people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” Initially reluctant to trust his ability, Moses asks who he is that he should beseech such a request of the Pharaoh, and God re plied that He would be with Moses on the journey. Moses finds himself in the archetypical biblical dilemma: he is asked to do the seemingly impossible and his only assurance of success is faith in God's promise of success. Like Abraham who was promised a countless progeny through his son Isaac and then was told to kill the boy in ritual sacrifice.
