Communication of Punk Music
Music is a powerful and deep form of communication. Music brings people together into subcultures of their own choice, unlike cultures that they are born into. ... Many look towards music and various frustrated teens choose the hardcore side of music; music that gets your heart pumping you body moving and your mind screaming. There is a lot of emotion in hardcore punk music, emotion that these teens and young adults can relate to, from the pressures from parents, to political frustrations. Today I will first give you a quick lesson on hardcore music so we are all on the same page, then I will show you how artists communicate with their fans thru music and finally, I will show you how music affects who the fans are and how they communicate. The latter is the largest part of this presentation because music influences how people communicate in so many ways. Body Hardcore Punk Roots Punk rock is a return to the rock & roll to the basics,— three chords and a simple melody. ... It was in mid-70s that punk became its own genre. On both sides of the Atlantic, young bands began forsaking the sonic excesses that distinguished mainstream hard rock and stripping the music down to its essentials. In New York, the first punk band was the Ramones; in London, the first punk band was the Sex Pistols. Although the bands had different agendas and sounds, the direct approach of the bands reinvented music in both the U. ... In America, punk remained an underground sensation, eventually spawning the hardcore and indie-rock scenes of the 80s, but in the UK, it was a full-scale phenomenon. ... When the Sex pistols came about there was much turmoil in Britain, unemployment had reached over 1 million and inflation was at it’s peak of 18% (Laing 5) This caused a resentment of the ideals of commercial society, punk wasn’t just music it was a way of life. The elements of punk life included dress, dance, speech, music, style and sometimes drugs. ... Punk music has changed and evolved over the years, there are so many types of punk it’s hard to name them all. Also most punk bands cross over into many different genres. As Bill from Authority Zero puts it, “We believe that music is universal, it crosses barriers with ease. ... Hardcore Punk, New York Punk, California Punk, American Punk, British Punk, Ska Revival, Rock-a-billy Revival, Post-Punk, No-wave, Straight-edge, Skater Punk, and many more. One of the most essential ideals of the punk sub-culture is the ability to reinvent one’s self, thus constantly reinventing the values of the culture. ... The people who listen to punk? There are exceptions to these stereotypes but the average punk rocker is a white male between the ages 15 and 29. According to James Lull, “girls who embrace the music and subculture must make some major adjustments from any behavior that reflects the preponderance of sex-role information they previously received and used.” Therefore punk rocks are generally not your “average girl.
