I believe that in comparing “The Harlot’s Progress” and “The Rake’s Progress” we can see how similar issues are displayed when it is different genders are used. Moll in the first plate is seen in the most positive light, just off the wagon, she is obviously naïve, and unaware of the trouble she is getting herself in. It is very easy to see how someone in her situation can be so easily led astray. Tom is seen in his first plate in a slightly worse way. He is obviously not saddened by his father’s death and a pregnant girl comes to the door with her mother carrying love letters and a ring.
