Born most likely in Lincolnshire in the year 1543, William Byrd was the greatest English composer of his time and by far one of the most versatile composers in all of history. ... Byrd most likely studied with the great Thomas Tallis, a renowned religious composer of his time; was appointed organist of the Lincoln Cathedral in 1563 at the age of nineteen; was bestowed with the prestigious title of “Gentleman of Her Majesties Chapel”; and became Tallis’s co-organist in 1569.
Although a devout Catholic during a time of much persecution, Byrd was a member of the Chapel Royal and provided music for their liturgy and also his fellow-Catholics.
