Hanna and Wilson (1998, p4) states their goals in writing the textbook as being ¡¥to look at problems in organization from a communication perspective ¡V as problems of message exchange.¡¦ According to Robbins (2000, p2, 116), an organization is defined as ¡¥a formal structure of planned coordination, involving two or more people who share a common purpose¡¦ and communication is defined as ¡¥both transference and understanding of meaning.¡¦ From these definitions, it explains that the goals of Hanna and Wilson as being to identify the problems in communication within a organization, relate problems within an organization to communication, how lack of communication prevent an organization to be successful, how problems in communication cause conflict within organization. To sum it up, how poor communication cause people with the same common goals to work in different directions. ¡¥To look at problems in organization from a communication perspective¡¦ is to see how communication can affect the organization¡¦s performance, the relationship between poor communication and failure in the organization. Unlike from a financial or technological perspective, which are usually limitations of the organization. Organization can work round the limitations, however communication is indispensable. ... For all functions of an organization such as planning, organizing and controlling, communication is needed to convey them. ... No organization can exist without communication. According to Robbins (2000, p117), communication serves four main purposes in an organization; they are ¡¥control, motivation, emotional expression and information¡¦. Communication enables leaders and managers to control work procedures, which could be chain-of¡Vreporting or imposing restriction of communication for their subordinates. Communication also allows the leaders and mangers to motivate and influence the individual needs and goals of the subordinates, by stating their mission statement or objectives, gives updates on their progress and emphasizes on desired working attitude. Communication allows members of the organization to interact to satisfy their own emotional needs and develop their personal, social and work relationships.
