Around 1836, a diverse group of young intellectuals in New england began to meet and talk about new delvopements in philosophy, theology, and literature. The gatherings were informal and membership fluctuated a lot, still,some people from the outside called the group the "Trancendental Club". The people who are known today as trancendentalists include Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoeau, Margret Fuller, William Ellery Channing, Bonson Alcott, Elizabeth Peabody, and George Ripley embraced a system of ideas tht provided the basis for a critique of virtually all aspects of american life. To the Transcendentalists individualism was pretty important. They had a real spirtual individualism that they practiced. As decribed on page 159 " It is threw this creative, inituitive, element in conciousness tht the human mind might realize its highest spirtual potential." The Transcendentalists understood everything in the world to be a microcosm containing in itself pg160.
