The year was 1692 and the villagers of Salem Massachusetts were plagued by a terrible affliction called witchcraft. ... These odd behaviors of Elizabeth and Abigail were the spark for Witch accusations that spread through Salem like wildfire. Strong convictions of faith, social problems, and deep rooted beliefs stemming back to childhood were the fuel that keep the suspicions burning in the minds of villagers until the trials were ended in 1693.
The beginning thought of witches in Salem Massachusetts is deeply rooted in religious convictions and stories imbedded into the minds of residents. Since religion holds an all powerful grip on the Puritans of Salem, it should be of no wonder then that a person employed by the devil would have caused speculations of witchcraft to grow. ... With the backings of absolute truths and faith, people in Salem would have a hard time having an open mind about abnormal situations. ... With witchcraft being the cause of many unfortunate situations for the citizens of Salem there must be one that practices the magic spells. Consequently, the only merchants of spells could be witches because you can’t have witchcraft without a witch to perform it.
Often, the person accused of being a witch would be a person that appears unfavorable to the beliefs and customs of the community. Also, people that were disliked on the basis of being disagreeable or ungrateful would have the unfortunate pleasure of being a witch.
