Hastings is known for the so called battle of Hastings on the 14th of October in 1066. ... Unlike most battles, the Battle of Hastings altered the whole course of history. “The battle of Hastings earned the title “The battle that charged history” because of the huge impact it had on the people and their culture, the country, and the way they were looked upon by the world. ... ” (1)
The battle itself did not take place in Hastings but eight miles inland, in a place called Senlac. But in 1066 Senlac didn’t exist and Hastings was the nearest place to the battle. The reason the Battle of Hastings is still called Hastings and not Senlac is because historians were so used to calling it Hastings they thought it better to leave it as it is. ... During the battle William’s men thought William had been killed. ... Two and a half weeks before Harold and his men had fought another battle of the 25th of September.
