Language learning process consists of three stages: 1) The presentation stage; 2) The practice stage or repetition stage; 3) The production stage or transfer stage or free practice stage (Wang, 1976:2). At the third stage, students should be given regular and frequent opportunities to use the language freely. Donne (1976: 2) once talked about the importance of the third stage in teaching oral English: ¡°¡no real learning can be assumed to have taken place until the students are able to use the language for themselves. ... ¡± So far, we have paid greater attention to the first two stages while neglected the management of the transfer stage. ...
3) The course of Listening comprehension should be reformed. ... 63% of the students were hoping to change the course into one in which they can develop the skills of listening and speaking, and the proportion of intensive reading class to listening and speaking class should be changed from 4:1 to 3:2. ... While in the face of the syllabus and examination requirements, many teachers investigated said they would lose heart and have to stop short at the second stage of the teaching. ... So it is essential for Chinese English teachers to pay more attention to the stage of producing language by creating lifelike communicative circumstances in classroom setting, and should not be satisfied with only presenting the new material effectively. ...
