As China now is in urgent need of field-specialized personnel with high English communicative competence, developing non-English majors¡¯ spoken English is for the first time placed on the agenda of the forthcoming new College English Teaching Syllabus. ... At the third stage, students should be given regular and frequent opportunities to use the language freely. Donne (1976: 2) once talked about the importance of the third stage in teaching oral English: ¡°¡­no real learning can be assumed to have taken place until the students are able to use the language for themselves. ... ¡± So far, we have paid greater attention to the first two stages while neglected the management of the transfer stage. ...
