Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, and his expectations about life, love, and himself: being very young and after his parents death, he ended up living with his sister, an ill-tempered woman who raised him “by hand”. ... That encounter ignites his desire to become a gentleman that would be worthy of her, and is the start of his great expectations. ... Great Expectations is a novel about broken hearts, broken illusions, and friendship. ... The final part of Great Expectations narrates the fall of Pip from his gentleman status. ... At the end of the book, one can taste Dickens’s own brand of justice: Good people inherit great amounts of money, or get married and live happily ever after; bad people is beaten into a semi-vegetative state, burned badly, smashed in the face and drowned, or end in prison for life or to die; and people who have sinned must do time in the purgatory of the many-times broken hearts, to later be exonerated and allow themselves to be happy. Great expectations is also a confrontation between creatures and their makers, in the same way that Frankenstein is.
