Fielding's conception of a comic epic in prose is, certainly, unique.Itmust of necessity have a large section of society. Life must escape from its narrow frame to inhabit under this large canopy. The comic epic poem in prose must reveal the social mores, the aspirations and tendencies of people. Henry Fielding does it with great credit in both of his novels, Tom Jones and Joseph Andrews. In them he portrayed the English society of the time. All kinds of people, except royalty, jostle in his pages. Since it is comic it must have that element of Humour in it, and so it has it in abundance. Fielding has an amazing knack of catching the essentials of human personality and makes capital out of it.
