An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
Ambrose Bierce’s, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, is a tale that focuses the story around the protagonist, Peyton Farquhar and his limited involvement during the Civil War. ... Now, the narrative voice shifts to an impartial omniscient view, giving details of the nature and life of Peyton Fraquhar before he was on the bridge and how he found out about Oak Creek Bridge. ... The narrator relates explicitly and intimately all of the protagonist’s
feelings, thoughts, and the passion that he shows during his time on the bridge. ... His home is visited by a Confederate soldier that tells Farquhar how a person could burn the bridge if he does not get caught by the Yankees who have orders to hang any civilian who is tampering with the bridge. The reader is now aware that due to Farquhar’s sense of duty, he wants to destroy this bridge and become that hero he feels is so important. Also, he was tricked because the soldier was a Federal spy, thus letting the reader know why the protagonist was being hung on the bridge.
