Relationship between Media and Politics
In our essay, we are going to examine the relationship between media and politics. ... We asked some questions to him in order to understand both the effect of media on politics and the impact of politics on media. In the second part we are going to give information about the objectivity of media and censorship, foreign politics, “tezkere” and “irtica”. ... The main elements in politics are political parties, parliament, executive organs and other organs, which involve in executive. ... Rezzak Oral made comparison between West’s democratic regime and Turkey’s democratic regime. ... Due to these reasons, the system does not give chance to young and middle age people to play significant role in politics. ... Rezzak Oral continued his comparison between the West and Turkey in terms of institutions of political parties, especially the party schools that give the specific information about politics. ... We cannot think that politics is separate from the whole society, such as universities, young people and state institutions. It is not possible to think the politics and these three things separately and they have a strong relationship with each other. For example, we cannot say that our youth is so well but politics is not or vice versa. The main effect of this situation is the education and the lack of contemporary education system; our youth, politics and media face to a kind of anomy. However, he claimed that we should examine media separately. Here we asked the position and effects of the media in Turkey. He firstly said that nowadays media become the tools of the powers instead of being itself the power. He added that the owners of media organizations give shape to content of the news according to their attitudes and benefits. Patrons of newspapers or other media organizations have additional private companies; therefore, we cannot see any news, which effect the finance relations of these companies badly. ... As a result of this strong relationship, we cannot talk about complete impartiality of media. Then we talked about the impact of media during the decision making process in parliament. ... These people are the media patrons and directors generally and they only involve in the decision making process about the subjects that effect them directly, such as RTÜK law. As he mentioned before the media patrons can give shape to the direction of the news. At this point we asked another question that journalists face to any restrictions from politics while they are preparing their news. His answer is that every correspondent mainly focuses on specific zone and as a result of this we can see reciprocity between correspondents and politics. ... Therefore, we cannot talk about the direct personal impact of politicians on media. ... Rezzak Oral concluded that politics cannot be completely institutionalized and in political life political decisions takes shape according to party leader and institutions (kurullar). At the same time, we cannot see the significant involvement of ordinary people to politics. However, we cannot separate politics from daily life and beside this relationship between politics and daily life, we can say that there is somehow a dependency relationship between politics and media too. ... As we understood that political parties do not have strong relationship with people, especially the suburb people. ... According to our opinion, political parties in Turkey should give more importance to the opinions of ordinary people and as we stated before in our interview that media may influence the political parties’ decisions at some degree. ... Due to this, the media organs should also give more places to the views of ordinary people in order to make them more effective in political life. ... If political parties can try to make the relationship with ordinary people, their decisions become more effective. Another topic we talked with interviewees is about the effects of media on politics and the decisions rulers have taken. ... S in the Iraq-war was being discussed, media has successfully orientated, the deputies who are supposed ‘free for their decisions’ and people, to the things what managers of the media groups would exactly want.
