Voting Public Opinion Elections

Voting, Elections, Public Opinion
The use of a representative government is the only true way to change the
characteristics of the constitution to conform to citizens wants and needs for their country. ... Because of
the impact the voices of the public have on government, it is essential to acknowledge
their benefit yet try to amend the downfalls.
One of the primary ways that politicians find out what their public is thinking is
through public opinion and polling. As Patterson noted, public opinion is “powerful yet
inexact” in many ways. The publics opinion is beneficial because it keeps public officials
in check, because it keeps them from straying too far outside what is normal when making
decisions. In turn, no politician would risk making a hasty or extreme decision based
solely on their own desires because the publics opinion is so forceful. However, even
though public opinion is essential and a democracy could not function without it, there are
some flaws with the system. Often times politicians are misled to believe a certain stance
on an issue comes from the public as a whole, when in realty only the voices of the most
vocal citizens are being heard.
