A Critical Analysis of Emily Dickinson’s Poem 67

67 Success is counted sweetest By those who ne’er succeed. To comprehend a nectar Requires sorest need. Not one of all the purple Host Who took the Flag today Can tell the definition So clear of Victory As he defeated- dying- On whose forbidden ear The distant strains of triumph Burst agonized and clear! The speaker says here that, “those who never succeed” need success more than others, because they don’t have it; “Success is counted sweetest” by them, that is they consider it very valuable. As an example of needing something, there is the need for the nectar, which is an image taken from Greek Mythology, which the nectar is the drink of the gods, to maintain their beauty and immortality.
