Advertising is all around us. ... My aims for this assignment is to look at what is the purpose of advertising and then argue whether or not advertising can be a negative influence on you. The main aim of advertising is to get a product or service noticed so that the general public will consider buying the product; basically generating information. ... It is this aim of becoming the most popular brand which leads to the company’s creating an often false image of what owning that brand will do to your life. This false image is then projected into the heads of the public causing them to try and achieve perfection that is often not possible or looking to purchase a good that is often out of their financial reach. ... For example everywhere you look, be it billboards or the television, there will be an advert advertising a famous brand name. ... This might generate the image into people’s minds that wearing/ using their brand will in a way make you more beautiful and lead a better life. ... In this way advertising is a negative influence on people as it gives people ideas on what society wants and also project images that are very hard to follow and often very expensive to keep up with, in terms of being up to date with the latest fashions and trends. ... It gives people hope that there is a perfect world out there, but you will have to work hard to be successful and lead a life like the people in the adverts. In a way it discourages unemployment, as it is telling people that if you want to dress well and eat well you need to work hard to achieve this and not just laze around all day. ... It is this inequality in the world that can slow down people becoming successful, often stopping them from being successful. No matter how hard some people try, they will never be able to achieve the rate of success projected in these adverts. ... If these people are continually exposed to these adverts of the perfect world, they can crack under the pressure. ... These people might think that if they can’t get these goods by working, they might as well steal the goods in order to live the perfect life. In more severe cases this constant exposure to adverts could lead to depression as these people can not deal with the fact that they are trying as hard as they can, but are not getting anywhere, which could lead to suicide. ... The world is also made up of different types of people, both rich and poor. ... (I’ve just turned on the television and changed to Cartoon Network and already I’ve been shown the latest ‘Sony Playstation 2’ game, the latest ‘Action Man’ and the latest accessories you can buy for your ‘Barbie’) As mentioned before the Advertising Code of Practice have rules to prevent advertisers from directly encouraging children to ask for things.
