On November 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, and 22, a new play by called ¡°Radiant Source¡± was shown at MATC. It was written by Holly Walter Kerby and directed by Pat Thom. The writer, Holly Walter Kerby, has been teaching chemistry at MATC for eight years when suddenly, it dawned on her that she wanted to write a play. She worked arduously on writing her play for many months. Finally, after three versions and two staged readings later, the script was almost done; however, there still were the rehearsals. Holly Walter Kerby sat through all the rehearsals and watched the cast run the scenes. She edited and sometimes even rewrote the scene on the spot one or two more times. Paris and I went to the 7:00 pm show on November 7 (opening night), only to find out that it was sold out. We were disappointed and decided to come back for the 2:00 pm show on November 8. This play ¡°Radiant Source¡± was a biography of Marie Sklodowska Curie. It starts off with Curie mixing two chemicals in her uncle¡¯s basement. The two chemicals explode and her uncle gives her a lecture about what a woman should do. Then she goes to Sorbornne in fall 1891 and comes across financial difficulties; however overcomes it with scholarships due to her abilities recognized by French scientists. She graduates with a master¡¯s degree in physics and while looking for a lab she meets her husband Pierre Currie. The director of the Paris Municipal School of Industrial Physics finally allows a damp, crowded storeroom to be used for her lab.
