In Dostoevsky’s The Grand Inquisitor the argument that men will give up their freedom and reject God for earthly bread is presented. ... ” Jesus rejects the things that would have helped the people he died for. The inquisitor uses the temptations in the desert to explain why Jesus is a heretic and has gone against the church. When Jesus rejects the bread he has done what very few men can do. “      Thou didst promise them the bread of heaven…can it compare with earthly bread in the eyes of the weak, ever sinful, ignoble race of man?”Yet he refuses to take people’s freedom away and by doing this supports povery, disease, etc… The inquisitor also states, “Thou wouldst go into the world, and art going with empty hands, with some promise of freedom which men in their simplicity and natural unruliness can not even understand, which they fear and dread-for nothing has ever been more insupportable by man and human society than freedom. ... Turn them into bread, and mankind will run after thee like a flock of sheep, grateful and obedient, though forever trembling, lest thou withdraw thy hand and deny them thy bread. ... ” This is the prediction of the Russian Revolution which is a perfect example of the inquisitor’s argument. ... As an institution it really supports freedom of choice, making your own decisions, and like Jesus oppresses by doing so . ... Basil the Great supported this by saying, “What thing do you call yours? ... Since then the church has followed in these footsteps and supported the rich and oppressors. ... The church receives federal funds at times and the Vatican has a huge bank, great wealth, supported Hitler and, stayed neutral in World War II during the persecution of the Jews. ...      
What good is freedom without food, with poverty, disease, and anguish? ... Many have argued this and live by these beliefs thus proving that freedom is relinquished for bread, and others have denied bread and great suffering occurs.
